Before I started creating my media products (music video, Digipak and album advert) I had to come up with ideas of what has going to happen in my music video and what the appearance of my Digipak and album adverts was going to look like. I used a storyboard to show what was going to happen in my music video frame by frame, I then took a picture and put it on my blog as evidence. I designed what my Digipak and album advert were going to look like on paper by following the conventions of the media products, then I took a picture and put it on my blog as evidence. Planning makes the whole creating process easier because if you have a plan of what your going to do I makes it easier then trying to think of ideas on the spot. Below is all the planning I did for my media products.
'Storyboard'
This is my story board for my music video, it includes the timing I need each shot to last, type of shot required, camera movement and information on what is happening in the shot. My story should be detailed enough that anyone could read the story board and be able to film the music video without asking any questions. However some of my storyboard isn’t in a lot of detail because I think I am prone to change my ideas during filming. During filming I may have opportunities to changes my ideas if necessary because if I feel like my original idea isn’t going to work or that I could make the filming better I will change the filming shot. I will do this because I want to be able to adapt and change my story board to fit what will be there in the video at the time of filming. My storyboard follows a narrative. I used narrative because this is what my target audience would expect of a music video with a acoustic folk genre.
'Risk assessment'
A Risk Assessment is a systematic method of looking at work activities, considering what could go wrong, and deciding on suitable control measures to prevent loss, damage or injury in any place of work. The Assessment should include the controls required to eliminate, reduce or minimize the risks. Risk Assessments are a fundamental requirement for any type of work in this case conducting a photo shoot. If you don’t know, or appreciate where the risks are, you are putting yourself and others around you at risk. Before the photo shoot i must look at all activities that could cause harm in order to decide whether i am doing enough to meet legal obligations to keep myself and others taking part in the photo shoot safe. This is a minimum requirement. The aim should always be to reduce the risks as much as is ‘reasonably practicable’. There are no hard and fast rules as to how Risk Assessments should be carried out. It’s important that Risk Assessments are carried out systematically and all of the foreseeable risks considered. In order to assess risks it is important to be aware of the distinction between hazard and risk. The following definitions are usually applied to these terms: Hazard: – Anything with the potential to cause harm, slipping on a wet floor, damaged or faulty equipment and noise are examples of typical hazards. Risk: – The likelihood that damage, loss or injury will be caused by a hazard and how severe the outcome may be.
The Health and Safety Executive recommend an approach where you carry out the process in five steps:
Identify the hazards associated with photo shoot activities or filming activies
Identify who could be harmed by those hazards
Identify how you manage the risks at present and what further steps might be required to reduce the risks further. These are your control measures.
Record the findings of your assessment and inform those at risk of the controls
Review the Risk Assessment
When deciding on control measures the following principles should be applied:
- Can the risk be avoided or eliminated?
- Can the risks be contained at source?
- Can the photo shoot or filming location be adapted to suit the individual? e.g. layout of the photo shoot , choice of equipment and methods of working, filming location

Risk Assessment
Activity: Photo shoot and filming
Objectives: To take the photos for my Digipak, magazine advert though a photo shoot and also to take a videos that I will edit to make my music video with.
Group leader: Christine Bell
Date: 08/11/11
2.1 Hazard List the hazards which could cause harm | 2.2 Risk List how might be at risk | 2.3 Controlling risk List existing precautions and whether more should be done | 2.4 Record your findings List what actions you’ve taken | 2.5 Review and revise Is there any further action required before, during and after the visit |
The person posing for the photo graphs may trip or slip in depending on the weather conditions i.e. rain or snow | The person taking the photos would be at risk and the person posing for the photos would be at risk. | Take precautions when taking the photos in the snow. | Wear sensible foot ware during the photo shoot. | Wear appropriate clothing during the shoot. |
Damaged or fault photo shoot equipment could cause injury – cameras, tripod, props | The person taking the photos would be at risk and the person posing for the photos would be at risk. | Make sure before the photo shoot begins that the equipment is not damaged or faulty. | If the equipment that you are using in the photo shoot is faulty or damaged don’t use it. | To solve the problem get some new none damaged or faulty equipment to use for the photo shoot. |
Depending on the location of the photo shoot, this could be a danger to both poser of the photos and the person taking the photos. | The person taking the photos would be at risk and the person posing for the photos would be at risk. | Make sure before the photo shoot, that you check the location of where the photo shoot is going to take place for any dangers. | Could change the place of the photo shoot and choose a location that doesn’t really have any dangers which could cause harm to the person taking the photos and the person posing for the photos. | Always check the location of the photo shoot before actually performing the photo shoot to see if there are any risks or hazards at the location. |
Lighting – The light may cause blindness or a headache if loving at it for so long. The light may cause blindness or a headache if loving at it for so long. | The person taking the photos would be at risk and the person posing for the photos would be at risk. | Move the light to an appropriate place for the photo shoot. | Could change the place of the photo shoot | Moved the lighting instead of changing the location of the photo shoot. |
Objects around the area could cause harm if precautions are now taken | Me, actor or actress could be at risk if precautions are not taken during the filming for the music video. | Make sure that the area is safe and if there is any unsafe objects around the area remove them before you begin filming. | Could change the place of where you going to do your filming if it is required. | Pick an appropriate and safe place to do the photo shoot. |

Shot plans (ideas for photos/locations recce shots)
Music advert shot plan –
Large Image on the music advert - Person standing with their back against the wall with one of there legs raised up against the wall to. They will be holding a prop in this case a guitar with will be at waist length (a position where they playing the instrument). It will be a whole body shot so that the whole person from head to toe is shown on the image. I am then going to manipulate this image by adjusting the colour and lighting in the image to make it to how I want the image to look on my music advert. The person posing for the picture will be wear black or dull clothing to connote the genre of music for my Digipak album.
Smaller image on the music advert – Person will be sitting in an empty room. They will be sitting in the room looking chilled out and relaxed. I will use a mid shot for this image and then I will manipulate this image by adjusting the colour and lighting in the image to make it how I want the image to look on my music advert. The person posing for the picture will be wear black or dull clothing to connote the genre of music for my Digipak album.
Digipak outer cover plan –
Image on the front outer cover of the Digipak – Person will be holding a guitar in the air behind their back; they will have their back to the camera so that the guitar and its features are shown to the camera. This will be an upper body mid shot. I am then going to manipulate this image by adjusting the colour and lighting in the image to make it to how I want the image to look on my Digipak. The person posing for the picture will be wear black or dull clothing to connote the genre of music for my Digipak album.
Digipak inner cover plan –
Image on inner cover of Digipak – Person will be holding a guitar playing it; they will be facing the camera. The image will be an upper body mid shot of the person posing for the picture. I am then going to manipulate this image by adjusting the colour and lighting in the image to make it to how I want the image to look on my Digipak. The person posing for the picture will be wear black or dull clothing to connote the genre of music for my Digipak album.
Image on inner cover of Digipak – Close up image of a part of a guitar. I am then going to manipulate this image by adjusting the colour and lighting (shutter effect) in the image to make it to how I want the image to look on my Digipak.
'Plan for Digipak'
Before I begin filming my music video I have produced the plans for my Digipak which I will produce along with the music video. I have planned rough sketches of what I want my Digipak to look like. I have made sure to include the conventions of a Digipaks so my overall Digipak will look more real and professional to the target audience.
Front outer cover and back outer cover
Following the conventions of Digipaks, I have put the name of the artist and album name on the front outer cover of the Digipak; this will be in large white bubble lettering with will stand out on the Digipak so that it can be easily recognisable by the target audience. The image on the front outer cover is of someone facing away from the camera holding a guitar straight in the air behind their back; this showing the features on the guitar. This image will be manipulated to look greyscale with the guitar in yellow so it stand out on the Digipak and catches the target audience’s eyes. The image will give the audience an impression of what type of genre the band plays (acoustic folk/ indie rock). I have put the bands logo on the back outer cover (as they are unsigned they have band logo instead of record labels). The track list will be the same type of font as the artist name and album cover, because I was very inspired by the reviews on the bands blog I decided to put a magazine review about the band on the back outer cover; this gives the target audience an idea how good the band are. I have also added a bar code to the back outer cover to the Digipak so I can be sold in retail shop i.e. supermarkets and music stores, also a copyright symbol. The back outer cover background is black which keeps to the colour scheme and key layout of the Digipak. Person posing for the image will be wearing black t – shirt and dark jeans, the audience will be able to relate to this because my audience profile shows that the target audience wear these sorts of clothing.
Inner covers of the Digipak
Inner covers of the Digipak
Following the conventions of Digipaks, I put two large images on the inner covers of the Digipak. One image is of the artist; the person posing for the image will have a serious expression on his face, this shows that the artist is quite serious about this himself and his music (showing he has passion). The image will be of the person holding a guitar playing it. Person posing for the image will be wearing black t – shirt and dark jeans, the audience will be able to relate to this because my audience profile shows that the target audience wear these sorts of clothing. This image will be manipulated to look greyscale so it keeps to the colour scheme and key layout the same in the Digipak. The other image on the Digipak is a close up image of a guitar; this image will also be greyscale so it keeps the colour scheme and key layout the same in the Digipak. On the side of this image their will be an inspiration quote that is meant to inspire people that like music. For these two images I will think about lighting very carefully.
'Plan for magazine advert'
Before I begin filming my music video I have produced the plans for my magazine advert which I will produce along with the music video. I have planned rough sketches of what I want my magazine advert to look like. I have made sure to include the conventions of a magazine adverts so my overall advert will look more real and professional to the target audience.Following the conventions of magazine adverts, I have put the artist name at the top of the magazine advert, this is so its stands out on the magazine so it attracts the attention of the target audience. The font is in white large bubble lettering, like the one used on the Digipak. I have put the bands logo on the back outer cover (as they are unsigned they have band logo instead of record labels). On the magazine advert I have add reviews from magazines i.e. Q magazine and Mojo, this gives the audience an idea of how popular or how good the band are, by what the magazines have said in their reviews. The date of when the album is released is in the magazine advert to show the target audience when the Digipak album will be available to buy in shops. This is also in the same lettering style as the artist name. There is contract information at the bottom of the magazine advert in the form of a website this tells the audience were they can buy the Digipak album and also is a website of the band blogs to that the target audience will be able to look and see background information on the band and its members. Also on the magazine advert is an image what the Digipak album cover looks like so when the target audience goes into a shop to buy it, it can be easily recognisable on the shelf. Their will be a large image located at he left hand side of the magazine advert, this will be of the artist stand with his foot and back against the wall, this image will be grayscale so that it links in with the other images on the Digipak (whole body shot of person). Person posing for the image will be wearing black t – shirt and dark jeans, the audience will be able to relate to this because my audience profile shows that the target audience wear these sorts of clothing. They will also be holding a guitar in their hands at waist height; this gives the audience an idea of what type of genre music the band play (acoustic folk/indie rock).
